Church of Agiou Spyridona

“Της Συνόδου της πρώτης ανεδείχθης υπέραχος, και θαυματουργός θεοφόρε Σπυρίδων Πατήρ ημών.” (“Of the First Council you were revealed as champion, and miracle-worker, God-bearing Spyridon, our Father.”) These words from the Apolytikion of the Saint we chant every year on the 12th of December. And we chant them with great joy, because Agios Spyridon is one of our own. He was born in Cyprus.

Agios Spyridon was born around 270 AD in the village of Assia in Cyprus. He began as a simple shepherd, lived in humility and purity, and through his virtues became Bishop of Trimythous. He took part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where he defended the Orthodox faith. His miracles were many and his compassion unceasing. The Church honours him as the Wonderworker.

The new church of Agios Spyridon in Episkopi honours this Cypriot heritage. Every 12th of December our community gathers here to honour the Saint who was born on this island, became a light for all of Orthodoxy and intercedes for us to this day.
